This advice has been reviewed and reissued. It contains new information in the Summary and under Safety and Security: Civil Unrest/Political Tension (parliamentary elections 5-6 September), Crime (update) and Money and Valuables (US currency), and Entry and Exit Requirements (visa requirements). The overall level of the advice has not changed.

Summary

  • We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Angola, with the exception of the capital Luanda, because of the high risk of civil unrest and criminal violence.
  • Parliamentary elections will take place in Angola on 5-6 September 2008. You should avoid large public gatherings and street demonstrations as they may turn violent.
  • Landmines are a risk throughout Angola outside major cities.
  • There have been reports of violent incidents against foreigners in Cabinda and North and South Lunda Provinces.
  • We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Luanda because of the risk of civil unrest and criminal violence.
